MCT OIL 101

MCT OIL

Medium Chain Triglycerides

The reduced chain length of the fatty acid means that MCT’s are more rapidly absorbed by the body and more quickly metabolized (burned) as fuel. The result of this is, instead of storing the MCT’s as fat, they are more efficiently converted into energy for immediate use by the brain, organs, and muscles.

Coconut oil in nature contains all 4 chains of MCT:

C6-Caproic acid- almost nil in coconut oil-tastes bad

C8-Caprylic acid-6% of coconut oil-shown to increase ketone production-antimicrobial-fastests to metabolize in the brain-bypasses the liver for processing

C10-Capric acid-9% of coconut oil-slower to turn into energy-usually in combination with C8

C12-Lauric acid-50% of coconut oil-converted by the liver, slower to convert into energy-in healthy guts lauric acid is converted into monolaurin, which is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiprotozoal properties (coconut oil is the richest source of lauric acid, breast milk is the next with about 6-10%)

LCT in coconuts are known as C14 and above. They are mostly saturated fats, including stearic acid (c18:0), oleic acid (c18:1), and linoleic acid (c:18:2). These are a source of fuel for the body and are found in other oils. They don’t provide a quick source of energy like the MCT’s but have other benefits. MCT oil is not found in nature on its own and is an extract of the coconut or palm kernel oil (red palm is not shown to have MCT). MCT is manufactured by machine to separate the medium chains from the rest of the oil. The fatty acids are extracted through an industrial process of “fractionation”.

Benefits of MCT Oil

  • Provide and promote the development of ketones

  • Has been shown to suppress appetite (fats keep you fuller longer)

  • Not stored as fat deposits in the body like long-chain fatty acids- instant energy

  • Research shows it supports brain energy in Alzheimer's (Mary Newport has original research)

  • About 10% less in calories than the long chains and lower than other fats

  • Have been shown to moderately enhance thermogenesis (fat burning)

  • Possible anti-coagulation effects, cholesterol reduction, antioxidant effects

  • Research for the aging brain, even protecting it from oxidation and inflammation

Ketones

Ketone production is a key component of low carb, these are fat-adapted diets such as Atkins, Paleo and the Ketogenic diet. The ultimate goal is to produce your ketones, MCT speeds up the process and adds more ketones assisting in the transition. Ketones are one of two substances which the brain can use as energy. Glucose is the other form. They can be used as immediate energy for the brain and muscles without carbs or protein.

BULLETPROOF XCT - 100% MCT, Coconut

BULLETPROOF BRAIN OCTANE - 100% MCT - 100% C8 CAPRYLIC ACID

NOTE: MCT oils are known to cause extreme gastrointestinal upset and nausea. It is best to start small and then increase to the recommended dose if you do experience this discomfort.

The oil should not be heated, if it is then the max heat is 150-160 degrees c. Heat can change the taste through oxidation and breakdown. It is best used on a salad or something that doesn't require heat.
